Optical web break detector and edge position sensor

Decreased capacity at a paper machine due to web breaks causes huge costs to paper industry. Breaks are typically detected by photocells and frequently there appears false detections or missed breaks. Therefore Vision Systems Oy has developed the very first camera based detector for web breaks and for paper web, wire or felt edge measurements, in a paper machine. Many currently used sensors and measurement systems at a paper machine can be replaced with this one device. This new detector technology offers better runability and cost efficiency due to high reliability and wide application ranges.


Unique solution

The new web break detector, VISIEYE, is designed for use in any location in a paper machine. The demanding ambient conditions and different colors of a wire and felt in a paper machine were taken into account in design. VISIEYE is the first integrated detector based on camera technique. It combines several different functions that are needed in break detection and edge measurements in paper process. After capturing an image it is analyzed and processed in an integrated processing unit. Detection and measurement signals are formed and forwarded to the automation system by using versatile I/O –connections. The detector creates signal outputs for a web break and edge position. If something unexpected situation occurs or sensor is unable to operate due to dirt or other reason a warning output is activated.

In the same housing with the detector there is an integrated powerful LED-lighting unit. The detector is installed in a double-wall protective housing of stainless steel. The housing is shaped specially for profiling compressed air purge on the window in order to keep it clean. In high ambient temperature area of paper machine the detector is cooled with a Vortec-tube cooler.

VISIEYE is easy to install and use in any part of a paper machine. It can even be installed outside of the paper web area, which enables easy access during normal operation.

Due to the installation outside of the web area there is no danger of dropping dirt or condensation water etc. falling from the detector to web.

Windows based software with clear menu and screens is used as user interface. When connected to a portable computer via RS232 connection one can set new parameters, load new software, follow signal levels during a maintenance etc. Also real-time information is available from the process by using this software.

Advantages

VISIEYE detector can be used in many different applications anywhere in paper making process: paper machines, coaters, calenders etc. It can be installed easily to different locations, even outside the web area.

VISIEYE enables continuous measurement of a web, wire or felt position together with the web break detection information by using only one detector. It is an accurate and highly reliable contact free detector, which provides exact data for process and quality control.
