Highly integrated direct process control with intelligent CCD-camera 

A high speed and high accuracy digital controller has been developed inside the VISI500 intelligent line-scan camera. This new integration level was obtained through a developing project financed by Vision Systems and TEKES. Widely applicable and user-friendly VISI500 for Windows user-sw was developed at the same project. New concept with integrated control features The known VISI500 digital line-scan camera has shown its efficiency in optical measuring of strip, web or plate type products in industrial processes. A totally new concept for strip or web position control is now launched. Now there is available a digital controller together with optical measurement functions inside the camera. This concept offers many advantages like very simple system structure, numeric parametering and calibration as well as easy commissioning. Significant savings can be achieved in system design and programming, cabeling and installations as well as in maintenance.

The basic idea of this concept is shown in the principal drawing below. There is normally one camera installed on the other edge of the strip or web in edge guiding or oncoiler position control application and two cameras installed on both edges of the strip or web in centring or decoiler control.

Strip position is measured with high speed and high accuracy by VISI500. A feedback sensor of the coiler or guiding roll is sending the actual position of it to the camera. The camera is counting a new setpoint value for the actuator according to the strip position. The camera forms an output signal for the actuator in a control loop in software.  

All information required can be sent to PLC or other automation system via serial link RS232 or RS485. It is also possible to use the PLC or automation systems as a master controller while the camera is a slave one. This is needed for example in cases where an offset-control or oscillation is required.  

VISI500 for Windows powerful user-sw  

The new user-sw offers a selection of different base measurements that are available through parametering windows. The main features of the standard user-sw are as follows:  

  • user-sw compatible with Win 95, Win 98 and Win NT

  • parametering of the camera  
    • measurement mode selection  
    • measurement area selection  
    • I/O-settings  
  • maximum of 32 separated measurement areas in one image  
  • enables 32 measurements simultaneously

Versatile I/O-connections  

The VISI500 concept with versatile I/O-connections enables to interface other sensors and devices directly to the camera. These features are used when implementing a measurement system including one or more cameras and inputs from pulse, speed, distance, position or other sensors. Outputs are used for alarms, interlocking, control and displays. 
Serial communication links are used for interfacing the cameras with PLC:s or PC:s .
