Machine vision solutions for effective material handling applications

RTS Cheos specialises in robotic and machine vision integration. Dedicated to providing the optimum solution utilising the most advanced technology, the company develops high quality systems and solutions for a wide range of industrial applications. Integrating robust, commercially available hardware with proprietary Pi-Vision and Pi-Control software packages RTS Cheos boasts an extensive blue chip client base spanning three Continents.

RTS Cheos is a member of the Pan-European RTS Group. With operating facilities in Finland, England and France, the Group specialises in high technology automation solutions for production and industrial automation, milling and grinding robotics, laboratory automation and nuclear engineering.

RTS Cheos - The ultimate partner for flexible material handling solutions

One product provided by RTS Cheos is Pi-Vision PP Ð a machine vision system utilised throughout industry for a wide range of material handling applications. Automatically determining, the location, orientation and scale of the target, the system is suitable for an almost infinite number of picking applications and can even be utilised in situations where components overlap. Provided with an integrated ethernet connection, the system can operate in high speed production environments where cycle times can be less than 1 second. The major benefits of Pi-Vision PP are it´s speed and flexibility - the production process can be made more effective through the integration of this sophisticated, yet cost-effective system.

The Pi-Vision PP software package includes: an integrated robot interface suitable for most common robot controllers, and a selection of sample robot programs. The start-up time for each application is very short and all necessary hardware components including the PC and frame grabber are provided, installed in a compact housing.

Application example - picking parts from a high-speed conveyor

An ABB Flexpicker robot equipped with conveyor tracking is guided by Pi-Vision PP to pick pieces of cheese from a conveyor. Imaging is triggered using sensor information. The vision system measures the position and orientation of the pieces of cheese on the conveyor and transfers this information to the robot via an ethernet connection. Simultaneously the robot traces the parts using an encoder connected to the conveyor. The conveyor moves at a speed of 300 mm/s and cycle-time of the robot is 1.2 s. The system has two similar picking stations connected to one vision system.

Pi-Vision PP can be used in four different types of material handling application.

Locating parts from a fixed pallet or box

  • Ethernet or serial connection to the manipulator or robot
  • Camera mounted on a robot arm or above the target area

Locating parts from stacks

  • Ethernet or serial connection to the manipulator or robot
  • Camera mounted on the robot arm or above the target area
  • 3D-calibration utilising the entire working area
Locating parts on a stepping conveyor
  •  I/O-triggering
  • Ethernet or serial connection to the manipulator or robot
  • Camera mounted above the conveyor

Locating parts on a high-speed conveyor
  •  I/O-triggering
  • Conveyor tracking
  • Ethernet connection to the manipulator or robot
  • Camera mounted above the conveyor
  • Progressive scan camera technology
