Modern machine vision improves identification of empty beverage containers in the reverse vending systems

Bevesys Oy is an international high technology company developing, manufacturing and marketing the recycling systems of the new generation. Located in Kouvola the company utilizes the modern machine vision in identification of the empty beverage containers in the reverse vending machines.

The basis of the identification-system in reverse vending machines developed by Bevesys Oy is the 2-D and 3-D machine vision. The basic component of a modern optical measuring system is an electronic camera. Using of the color camera technique enables more exact identification of the measured objects. In some cases the color is the only individual  feature of the object.

The two-dimensional determination enables concurrently several observations based on the different measuring methods.

Individualizing the object is possible with the features which a human uses for determination. The physical measurements of the object can also be checked in order to  make the identification as reliable and  exact as possible.

All the geometric information necessary for the three-dimensional determination of
object details in primarily stored in the two-dimensional images. A true on-line 3-D vision system needs at least two cameras. The three-space co-ordinates of object details are derived by triangulation from the overlapping images produced by the cameras. The actual transformation parameters for real-time photogrammetric systems are determined by system calibration.

After calibration of the system, it is possible to locate every object space detail derived from images and viewed by at least two cameras at a time. This is done by an intersection, which is a reverse and simultaneous transformation of the two-dimensional image co-ordinate observations
parameters are those determined during system calibration.

707 BC reverse vending machine

The Bevesys reverse vending machines represent the new generation of recycling. With the modern and reliable equipment and functioning solutions Bevesys can offer each client an individual and comprehensive system to take care of recycling. The Bevesys reverse vending machines serve well both the busy consumer and the demanding shopkeeper.

The Bevesys reverse vending machine 707 BC is for recycling empty beverage containers and crates. The identification of the empty container’s profile as well as the measurements, shape and bottle amount of the crate is based on a modern machine vision and color camera technique. The basis in designing these reverse vending machines is the patented machine vision method, further developed for recognizing the profiles of empty beverage containers. Combined to the signal processing, automation and control technique the Bevesys 707 BC machines represent the Finnish expertise and high technology at its best.

The Bevesys 707 BC reverse vending machine is very reliable and easy to use. The system recognizes and handles a bottle in less than one second. The recognition capacity is 1500 different single containers and crates, and the memory is still expandable. The PC-technique used in the Bevesys machines gives also varied possibilities for data-acquisition and managing. The open interfaces and the Linux operating system enable the modern data communication solutions for maintenance and remote services.

The Bevesys reverse vending machines are capable of recognizing and handling all the glass and PET bottles, crates and aluminium cans within the refund-system in Finland. The new containers are easy to program to the machine’s database through the telephone network. If the machine is not connected to the telephone it can be programmed as well on-the-spot.

The Bevesys reverse vending machines are user friendly. The easiness in recycling with 707 BC is based on the modern PC-technology. Machine guides its users as well as the market’s personnel with the graphic symbols. Also the ergonomic needs are taken into consideration when designing the machine. In-feeding the empty beverage containers is comfortable to tall as well as to small persons.

The device can be connected to the shopkeeper’s local network. The technical solutions based on the open standards and trivial components enable the quick and simple upgrading of the system. The shopkeepers receive also detailed information about the recycled containers according to their own wishes.

The Bevesys reverse vending solutions are always individually manufactured according to the customer’s needs. The systems contain the machine and the backroom equipment for handling and storing the empty beverage containers and crates. The modular solution makes it simple to attach the accessories and features to the system if needed.

The Bevesys reverse vending machines are designed and manufactured to serve the users quickly and reliably today and far in to the future.
