Wider use of machine vision through networking

Machine vision has proven its profititability in many industrial fields. Companies using machi-ne vision technology have increased and impro-ved their ability to compete within both domestic and international market. The HEVISION-projetc that aims at wider application of machi-ne vision technology started in the end of 1997 to establish an active network for experts of machi-ne vision and companies using it in their produc-tion. The purpose of the network is to launch new projects.

Hevision-project and its aims

The Hevision-project is organised and coordinated by the Heinola areal office of Centre for Continuing Education and Development of Mikkeli Polytech-nic. The project is carried out in cooperation with industrial companies and TEKES (Technology Development Center), who also finance it.

The Hevision-project started with a complete sur-vey of Finnish machine vision experts and system producers. This survey gave a basis for the main aim:  a network of machine vision technology that provides companies with effective and wide-ranging help in machine vision related problems, including possible financing. In this survey stage machine vision technology is divided in different fields of expertise, such as pattern recognition and machine vision measuring, which are used in appli-cations of process automation, quality control and robot vision. In practise, the network is available in the internet as web home pages that offers an easily accessible source of information. As the project proceeds, it also aims at cooperation with corres-ponding international networks.

Hevision-network and its operation

Figure above illustrates how the Hevision-project operates to develop and increase the application of machine vision technology in industrial companies.

Hevision-network and its advantages

The Hevision-network facilitates the transfer of machine vision technology between manufacturers and the industry. The problem that attemps of laun-ching new products and developing production usually face is financing. This is one of the areas where Hevision-network can provide help.

The advantages the Hevision-project offers for machine vision experts and system producers inclu-de increase in business operations and a marketing channel for their products and expertise. Companies using machine vision, in turn, can profit from an increase in production, improvements in quality and in the ability to compete on domestic and interna-tional market.
