A new step has been taken in the field on on-line measurement of strip products.
Vision Systems Oy developed a new high accuracy on-line width measurement for 
Industrial applications. 
The VS5000HA is based on the latest line-scan camera technics and reaches accuracy
class of 0.01 mm. System is capable to measure at the same time several widths on the basis of customer needs. 
VS5000HA is an answer for increasingly higher quality control requirements in strip production lines. 

Successful pilot in Germany

VS made a pilot project together with a German machine builder and the results were excellent. With measurement area of 200 mm the accuracy was in between 0.003 mm-0,008 mm. Products of various materials, widths and thicknesses were tested. As a result of the pilot the accuracy of 0.01 mm can be now quaranteed. 

System configuration

The measurement unit consists of a measurement frame, camera housing, a light source and a computer. The linescan camera measures and calculates the widths and positions of each strip. Backlight is used to get good contrast on the edges of the strip. Measurement results are transferred from the camera to the computer with RS232 serial communication link.

Experiences

The vertical movement of the strips has no effect to the measurement results, neither does the movement to the sideways. Measurement of the strips is not possible if there is no caps between the strips. Errors caused by twisting around the longitudinal axis of the strip has to be handled mechanically by installing supporting rolls both sides of the measuring area.
