AN EXPEDITION INTO TESTING AND QUALITY CONTROL Orbis Group, a specialist in application of RF, machine vision, and fiber optics, offers business-promoting added value services to its customers in the telecommunications field. Founded in 1949, Orbis Oy’s field of business activity is refining and integration of special components, full-service testing automation, and technical support services. Situated in Vantaa, Helsinki, Salo, Oulu, Tallinn, Stockholm, and Dallas, the total number of staff is over 300. Sales in the year 2000 exceeded 500 million FIM. Machine vision systems The two strong areas of machine vision knowledge at Orbis are quality control systems for the plastic industry, and exploiting machine vision as a part of testing technology. In addition to machine vision, both RF, audio, and EMC technologies are closely connected to the basic knowledge in testing technology, says Tapio Koskinen, Sales Manager for Orbis Machine Vision. The machine vision systems and applications have been developed for quality control, identification of products, and for acquisition of data from changes in production processes. The main users of the applications are the telecommunications industry and its subcontractors. In the machine vision systems, CCD cameras are used. The image registered by the camera is forwarded to a computer, or to processor unit specially made for machine vision. Images of faulty products can also be saved in the computer’s memory for later study. The total expertise of Orbis covers the customer’s production process from the beginning to the end, from the manufacture of the circuit board to packaging of the finished product. - Our central role is to be present at all stages of the production, including the quality control of the subcontractors. Our added value is knowledge of the RF technology. We understand the complete production process, which facilitates the discovery of the testing needs of our customers.
RF and telecommunication systems Orbis delivers the measuring and testing systems as turn-key projects in the fields of radio telephony, data communication, data acquisition, and interference measurements, as well for product development, production processes, as for quality control. In addition to its own systems production, Orbis represents in Finland testing systems for type approval from its principal Rohde & Schwarz. To our customers, we offer a total service concept so that they can concentrate on their own central business, emphasizes Heikki Saukko, Sales Manager for RF and Telecom Systems. In our technical organization, an own product development group for RF and telecommunication systems supports the sales organization. - The product development group designs the systems, after which they are produced in our own plant. Under the management of the technology group acts also the Customer Support Service (CSS) Group, that takes responsibility for export of the systems and their commissioning in the product development or production at the customers’ plants. The customers for our measurement and testing systems are mainly the same as for machine vision. - The machine vision and RF & telecommunication groups operate in tight cooperation. Among our customers are the leading companies in telecommunications, such as manufacturers of telephones, base stations, wireless communication equipment, and their subcontractors. - We are able to offer our customers integrated solutions that consist of visual and electrical checking within the system. Orbis has its sales and production units in Vantaa and Oulu, Finland, as well as in Tallinn, Estonia, and Dallas, Texas. The company is commencing production of its systems also in China. - We want to serve our customers as well as possible and stay close to them. We have customers in Finland and all over the world. Our products have been delivered to several countries in Europe, to the United States, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada. Opening of the unit in China creates new markets to us.
Components In the production of prefabricated cables, Orbis has specialized in manufacture and assembly of coaxial and semi-rigid cables as well as jumper and fiberoptic cables. The company also represents several internationally appreciated manufacturers of components, fiber optics, and connectors. The target group of the components section consists of the electronics industry, wireless communication, measurement and testing, fixed networks, as well as security and surveillance. The most important components are RF connectors, active RF components, cables and prefabricated cables, as well as fiberoptic connectors, cables and prefabricated cables. One of the most important

- We deliver components according to the needs of our customers. Although we also deliver standard products, our aim is to find an ideal solution for each customer. Therefore, our Components unit has especially invested resources into technical support, says Tiina Kataja-Lyly, Sales Manager of the Production Components unit. - The technical support engineer acts in the interface between the customer’s product development and our sales department, to ensure that the customer gets exactly what he is looking for. Logistical functionality is extremely important for the telecommunications industry, which is constantly on the move. - We receive forecasts from our customers, place scheduled orders, make buffer contracts, etc. We also apply a consignment stock system, i.e. we ha a stock at the customer’s plant. The aim is transparent networking, to find the optimal, flexible customer-specific solution.
