Inspecting the invisible

Traditionally the human eye has been regarded as the best tool for quality control in many fields of electronics and the plastics industry. With today’s requirements for speed and accuracy, it is necessary to utilize more advanced techniques - such as the Orbis Machine Vision System. Orbis Machine Vision Systems make diagnostic determinations according to the client’s specifications. They gather statistics, screen essential information and make decisions for the benefit of the client.

The Orbis Lens Inspector

The Orbis Lens Inspector is a system dedicated to the requirements for inspecting precision moulded plastic parts. These parts have to be produced within very narrow mechanical tolerances. Additionally, their optical properties must meet very strict requirements. The transparent area, foil area and printed area must be completely flawless. The Orbis Lens Inspector is a highly flexible system which is versatile and can be adapted to various inspection applications.

The Orbis Solution

  • Inspection module
  • Fixtures (jigs)
  • Vision HW
  • Calibration (test) lenses
  • Lens Inspector SW
  • Operating and user’s manuals
  • Commissioning
  • Training

The System can be used

  • To inspect the transparent area of the window against black / white spots and lines, scratches, air bubbles and stains
  • To detect defects of the frame area: lines, 3D defects, contrast differences, colour inhomogenities
  • To check for the foil or the printing positioning
  • For on-line control of mechanical dimensions
  • To inspect the quality of the logos by detecting lines, spots and malformations in text/logo.

Inspection of bigger 3D surfaces

The Cosmetic Tool is a solution for inspecting defects from bigger 3D surfaces and available as an option for Lens Inspector SW.

A typical product which requires 100% quality control and inspection is the mobile phone cover or similar 3D product with various inspected surfaces and is produced in large numbers. Programming of new products is fast and the interface of the system is easy-to-use. Complete and reliable record of inspection results and defect database can be used for process control. Handling of the product can be arranged e.g. using a robot.

Orbis delivers machine vision systems to Perlos

Orbis Oy delivered machine vision systems (Orbis Lens Inspector) to the production lines of Perlos Oyj, for quality control of plastic windows of mobile phone covers. The systems were delivered to the Lehmonharju Plant of Perlos.

”Orbis was selected on the basis of the previous systems they delivered and the service they are able to offer. The Lens Inspector is a cost-efficient system for reliable, 100 % quality control. Even the tight time schedule we specified did not deter Orbis, and the project proceeded at commendable speed,” said Mika Juvonen, Development Manager at Perlos Oy Lehmonharju Plant.

Perlos is a leading manufacturer in the World of precision die-cast thermoplastic components, assemblies, die-casting moulds, connectors, antennas, and automatic assembly lines, and also an important customer of Orbis Oy. We are proud and grateful for the confidence shown, and of the fact that we were selected to deliver to Perlos a comprehensive quality control machine vision system that fulfils the customer’s requirements for speed and accuracy,” said Jarmo Justén, Vice Director of Orbis.
