DNAforesight a new-generation tool to manage web beaks and improve papermaking performance

Solving the origins of web breaks

A paper machine we break is often a mysterious thing. when and where it happened is obvious most of the time, but the chain of events leading to it are often unclearand lost forever in the broke pit. Many break cauded arestubtle and intermittent, with complicated reactions for their occurance

Papermakers therefore need a better, clearer view of the web at different machine locations so they can see the events leading to a break and more sophisticated analysis tools to identify them. Furthermore, they need a break analysis system. which is open, configurable, and remotely accessible so extra sets of eyes, within the paper company or at Metso, can see the same problems and help papermakers with solutions to improve machine efficiensy

Clear hindsight means better foresight

to answer these needs Metso Automation has introduced a new-generation web runnability and break analysis system, called DNAforesight.

DNAforesight is no mere video recording and replay system. It is a valuable tool for trouleshooting, analyzing breaks ortail threading problems. This clear hindsight provides a better foresight, so future problems can be avoided and the papermachine can run consistently at its top efficiency.

Consistent performance

A paper sheet thet is free of instabilities, flaws and stresses will run continuosly for very long periods. But some machines have chronic runnability problems that severely reduce their efficiency. Even the best machines have periods of instability, which can extend for several days. And, when tail threading is a problem, the problems can gon on and on. With DNAforesight as a diagnostic tool the reasons for repeat breaks and tail threading problems can be found, their reasons solved or avoided, optimum efficiecy can be restored and the machine can reach higher speeds.

Break reduction program benefits:

  • Fever breaks
  • Faster tail threading
  • Higher speeds
  • Increased efficiensy

Pinponting and isolatioing the causes

DNAforesight is based on an advanced digital platform with industry standard hardware, which is easy to maintain and to upgrade in the future. It is configurable and application specific to meet the millīs current and future image analysis requirements. And, most imprtantly, it is fastresponding, intuitive and easy to use by the machine operators.

Optimal Imaging Chain

For meeting different image resolutions requirements a variety of camera types, including digital, progressive scan, color, and thermal are supported. For capturing high-speed events, image update rates up to 120 frames per second area available. The entire imaging chain, including, the flicker-free, high intensity lights, the application specific cameras, the coaxial o fiber optic cabling, together ensure the optimal image quality. With Wavelet Image Compression, also used in medical x-ray imaging applications, the small and most important details are preserved for future analysis. All camera images are captured continously - and without exception - in a dynamic image buffer, whose buffering capacity can be selected to suit the machine speed, machine length or configuration. Saving of images in teh event database can be triggered via on OPC connection or sedcrete binary inputs. Images from selected cameras can also be saved upon user request at any time. The triggers can be a web break, the multi-zone event tracker (MET) function, a web inspection system (WIS) alarm, a reel turup, or any other machine event. A special tail threading mode has a longer data storage interval. Synchronized break image sequences, reviewed frame by frame, and live images from any camera can be freely selected and viewed on any monitor.

Enhanced analysis

Several annotation and image enhancement tools help to display problems with improved clarity. Using a drawing tool, reference points can be drawn on real time video images to follow, for instance, teh center press roll release point. Picture-in-picture, zoomingm freezing functions are also available for operator convenience. Break images can be digitally enhanced to show the smallest details or pinpoint obscure faults. A special imagic lens feature allows papermakers to see portion of the frame in more detail. Event recording can be trigered by up to four multi-zone event tracker (MET) windows within each cameraīs view. When a special tail-threading mode is activated, papermakers can see the web stability along the machine and problems with tail threading.

With the multi-zone event tracker (MET), problematic sheet areas, like the edges, can trigger an event alarm.

The magic lens shows specific problems in finer detail.
