Heli Helaakoski, Senior Principal Scientist, VTT: Towards autonomous systems – promises and considerations for industry?
Autonomous systems will have an effect on every part of our life, business, industry and leisure and the implications have never seen before. Recent development of technology in artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, telecommunication networks, human-computer interaction and robotics enable completely new type of multi-technology systems that are able to work with humans or even without human control.
The push for autonomous systems is coming from the involvement of the large companies that are linking together technology developments in connectivity, sensors and handling of big data. Market pull is coming from a wide range of applications where autonomy promises to do things that could not be done before, or to do existing operations more efficiently or safely.
There is wide range of opportunities, implications and challenges that autonomous systems will bring to us. Autonomous transformation will bring along also operational, design, legal, ethical and moral issues. This presentation will discuss about the promises and considerations these complex multi-technology systems will bring to us.
"I work as a senior principal scientist at VTT focusing on digitalisation and artificial intelligence, especially on applying ICT technologies in various industrial environments. I have worked almost 20 years at VTT in various positions - research manager, team leader and senior scientist. My current responsibilities entail preparing and leading projects both on a national and international level.
Currently, I am a coordinator of an EU project Morse that is optimising the use of resources and energy in the European steel industry, and an opportunity leader in Secured Autonomous Systems in VTT’s strategic work. I am inspired by the ever-evolving field of information technology, and always eager to combine my hands-on expertise to my ability to create impact for research."

Pilvipalvelut, tekoäly, reunalaskenta. Kun pilvipalvelujen hajautettu laskentakapasiteetti levittäytyy kohti reunaa, tulee myös tietoturvallisuudesta huolehtia kokonaisvaltaisesti tämä muutostrendi huomioiden Miten kyberturvallisuutta tulisi toteuttaa reunalla, pilvessä ja sillä välillä?
Mikko Viitaila työskentelee teknologiajohtajana Microsoft Oy:ssä. Hänen päävastuualueitaan ovat teknologian käytön edistäminen, asiakkaiden auttaminen uusien mahdollisuuksien hyödyntämisessä sekä turvallisen digitalisaation edistäminen. Mikolla on yli 15 vuoden IT- ja kyberturvallisuusalan kokemus yksityisen ja julkisen sektorin palveluksessa.
Mikko Viitaila is the National Technology Officer of Microsoft Finland. His responsibilities include helping customers unveil the possibilities of new technology and advancing secure digitalization. Mikko has more than 15 years of experience in IT and cybersecurity in both public and private sector organizations.
